The Art Student Association is an award-winning program recognized locally and statewide in MI & WI for its innovative approach to celebrating excellence in the visual arts.

This year, each student in the Florence High School art program entered work into the ASA show. That alone is something to celebrate. Our students should be incredibly proud of the creativity, effort, and growth they’ve shown.

Each year, university representatives from Michigan and Wisconsin jury the show and select 50 Merit Awards from hundreds & hundreds of entries. We are proud to recognize this year’s Florence Merit Award recipients:

Jaylinn Kappes - Somewhere, Beyond
Chloe Zegar - Hareta Kamayama
Lyla Nolan - Gone Fishing
Dexter DeLaet - Flippy Wonderland
Naomi Millan - The Clown Doctor

In addition, students had the opportunity to participate in portfolio reviews with university representatives. The following FHS artists participated in the portfolio reviews: Chloe Zegar, Reed Makuck, and Lily Soderberg.

During the awards ceremony, the University of Michigan STAMPS Program presented a Full Scholarship to a Virtual Pre-College course to Chloe Zegar.

The Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design Admissions team nominated Jaylinn Kappes for a scholarship in the amount of $16,000. The scholarship is contingent on acceptance into MIAD during the fall of 2027.

We are incredibly proud of all of our students for the work they contributed and the way they represented Florence. Congratulations to all.

💚💛 Honoring Those Who Served 💛💚

Each year, our students take part in a meaningful tradition—helping prepare the Veteran’s Wall for Memorial Day. They carefully add the names of local veterans who have passed, honoring those laid to rest at Commonwealth, St. Mary’s, Florence, and Woodlawn Cemeteries.

With great attention to detail, students ensure every name is spelled correctly and placed with care. More than just a task, this is a labor of respect and gratitude. Our students take pride in this work, recognizing it as a small but important way to give back to those who gave so much.

We are incredibly proud of their dedication and the respect they show in honoring our community’s veterans. 🇺🇸 #GoFloCats
