On Tuesday, Dec 10th, Mrs. Cassidy and the high school environmental science class visited the school forest. They enjoyed an interpretive hike around the property that was led by Andy Nault, DNR Forester/Ranger, Taylor Ziolkowski, Florence County Forestry and Parks Assistant Administrator, Lindsay Peterson, Wild Rivers Invasive Species Coalition (WRISC) Coordinator, and Natalie Hunding, WRISC Project Manager.
The students learned about the history of the school forest, the impact of white-tailed deer on forest regeneration, the impacts of invasive species on forest ecosystems, the importance of forests and bogs in the carbon cycle, and they observed examples of ecological succession on our school forest property.
The class would like to thank Ms. Secrist, Mr. Jerue, Mrs. VandenHeuvel, Mrs. Roberts, Mr. Knox, Mr. Witynski and our guest speakers who all put in extra effort to help make our trip to the school forest go very smoothly. In addition, special thanks goes out to Mr. Gaston who drove us there safely and joined us for our day of learning.
