Monday marked the 30th Anniversary of the Association of Student Artists with a large art exhibition at KHS. Eight area schools from MI & WI are now involved in ASA. During the celebrations, Ms. Elsa Brule surprised all 8 participating schools and ASA with generous monetary donations. FHS would like to thank Ms. Brule and everyone else who donated money, time, or support to our artists. Without you, we could not hold such an amazing event. FHS would also like to thank KHS's jazz band for playing a great selection of music during our reception. Lastly, we were lucky to be joined by many of the former ASA art teachers and community members that were involved in the founding of ASA. Thank you!

The Florence County School District along with the Florence County Sheriff have released the following statement: To Whom it May Concern; Recently Sheriff Chrisman and MS/HS Principle Brandon Jerue met in regards to some important issues to keep our students safe and healthy. Incidents of sexting and vaping had been reported or observed by students and/or staff and we felt an open joint communication in regards to these matters was the first step to combat the issue. In 2019, the school adopted a policy change to help educate students on the choices of tobacco/e-cigarette device use. When students were observed or found to be in possession of vaping or tobacco products they were referred to education classes to teach the students the dangers of smoking/vaping. We do believe that education is very important for youth so that they can make a healthy, smart decision. However, as adults we do realize that those smart, healthy choices are not always made for a myriad of reasons. Both the Sheriff/s office and school administration have seen an “uptick” in the use of vaping devices/tobacco and, unfortunately, as well as marijuana in our youth. We believe that there needs to be more consequences in place so that our youth realize it is not worth the risk. These vaping devices and tobacco products are not allowed on school property. Moving forward, we have now changed our policy so that you are not afforded second chances. If you are found with vaping or tobacco products on school property the school will be alerting our Sheriff's Office who will then issue a citation, along with taking an educational class in regards to vaping/smoking/chewing tobacco. It is illegal to consume/possess nicotine/tobacco products until you are 21 years of age. The forfeitures are as follows: $162.50 SS 254.92  Purchase or possession of cigarettes or tobacco products or nicotine products by person under 18 prohibited. (Federal law is now 21 years of age). The same consequences are always involved when you are also a student athlete, and you must abide by the Athletic Code. We truly hope that students will make the right decision and not begin this addictive habit of nicotine and/or tobacco use. Secondly, we would like to remind parents to talk to their children in regards to sexting. I urge you to have this difficult conversation and routinely check phones and social media accounts. We have been made aware of the possibility of 12-13 year olds sharing nude images. This ordinance was adopted in 2017 to combat this behavior. Chapter 8: Offenses and Nuisances, Subchapter 13: Prohibiting “Sexting”. Sexting is defined as the sharing of explicit images, nudity, sexual conduct that could be harmful to minors. A minor is anyone under the age of 18. A minor commits this offense if he or she knowingly uses a computer, or any other device (phone) capable of electronic data transmission to transmit/distribute any photograph or video of any person that depicts nudity. If a report is made to the school that warrants the Sheriffs Office to investigate further and minors/juveniles are found to be sexting a forfeiture in the amount of $250.00 can be issued as well as a referral to Florence County Human Services for this violation. Any questions or concerns please reach out to either Sheriff Teresa Chrisman or Principal Brandon Jerue. Sincerely, MS/HS Principal Brandon Jerue Sheriff Teresa Chrisman
